My invitation to us all today: Let’s remember that behind the Labor Day holiday lies a critically important, centuries old, sometimes violent continuum-history of sustained and often heroic efforts by countless human beings to gain basic and decent working and living conditions for us all, including the right to rest. I’ve said this before, and I will say it again: We do not need to earn rest.
It is a birthright. I know that there are many threads through world history around the fight for workers’ rights. Perhaps in honor of the why for today’s holiday, consider taking a couple minutes today to read a bit about just one of them:
the Farm Workers Movement. And, if you are inspired and have the means to help out those who help feed us, here’s a great list of organizations supporting farm and food workers. May we all continue to work towards a planet where every single person earns a fair and living wage for their work, in safe working conditions, supported and valued by their employers, and can go home at the end of each day to sleep and rest safely and well.
