Yoga Therapy FAQs
The International Association of Yoga Therapists defines yoga therapy as “the professional application of the principles and practices of yoga to promote health and well-being within a therapeutic relationship that includes personalized assessment, goal setting, lifestyle management, and yoga practices for individuals or small groups.”
For me, yoga therapy is a personalized, collaborative, and iterative process. I draw from yoga’s wide-ranging toolbox – breathwork, movement, rest, meditation, and beyond – and together we explore your goals and continually refine the practices that best support your needs. We work within an open, curious, and compassionate space that invites healing, self-awareness, and resilience.
Unlike other therapeutic modalities where a practitioner works on the client, yoga therapy relies on the client being an active participant in their own healing. Authentic engagement, curiosity, and dedication are what help create meaningful, sustainable change – both on and off the mat.

Between physical therapy, psychotherapy, and Western medicine, there is a gap. In that gap, there is an opportunity to bridge the space between: the mind-body-heart connection. This bridge is Yoga Therapy – where we cultivate practices that can access that holistic connection and reduce psychoemotional suffering.
Yoga Therapy is not meant to take the place of allopathic medicine. Instead, it is a complementary practice that can help clients holistically navigate both the physical and emotional events of chronic illness and daily life.
“Pain is inevitable; suffering is optional.”

Yoga Therapy is completely and uniquely customized to meet you where you are at – right now. It’s the opposite of a one-size-fits-all concept.
Yoga Therapy is collaborative! You are an active, centered co-creator of the practice. In fact, it doesn’t work without your participation! Together, we focus in on discovering the combination of tools that give you access to more ease, balance, and peace in your life.
We commonly think of yoga solely from a fitness perspective – postures and active movement; however, in Yoga Therapy we access the collective yoga toolbox! This “toolbox” does include postures and movement, but also often includes breathing practices, meditation, self-awareness/mindfulness techniques, intention/goal-setting, relaxation strategies, lifestyle habits/schedules, or affirmations.
Yoga Therapy practices rarely look like the “typical” yoga class you might have in mind. Yoga Therapy:
• focuses in on a specific issue or consideration
• involves home practices you explore between sessions
• is usually quite short (5-15 minutes) so it can fit into your day – I call it “yoga snacks”!
• includes education, exploration, and discoveryYoga Therapy is frequently offered privately, one-on-one. However, it can also be offered in a small group setting focused on addressing a specific issue / condition.

Yoga Therapists do not diagnose or treat from the Western/allopathic medicine perspective. Many clients come to Yoga Therapy looking to augment their ongoing/existing treatment for an acute or chronic health condition.
Yoga Therapy is not me (the yoga therapist) telling you (the client) what to do. I am not an authority on your body. I am a guide with specific education and tools to share from the yogic lens. This work is invitational and explorational. You have 100 % agency and we create the work together!
Yoga Therapy is not a magic wand or pill. It is just one set of tools for self-empowerment, healing, and transformation. It takes your curiosity, compassion, and dedication to consistent practice for it to work.

Anyone can be a good candidate for Yoga Therapy. Yoga can help reduce stress, reduce pain, increase energy, stabilize mood, and improve sleep. It’s a holistic, whole-person approach to health, balance, and overall well-being.
That said, those with a specific health focus (such as arthritis, chronic pain, cancer, anxiety, or menopause – to name a few) who are keen to acquire tools specific to their condition may find Yoga Therapy a particularly potent addition to their wellness program.

Your minimum commitment is four (4) sessions with me. So your initial series is complete in 4-8 weeks.
• One session per week or every other week – either in-person or online.
• There is no obligation or commitment beyond these initial four sessions, but you are welcome to continue with me for as many follow-up sessions as you wish, at your own pace. Here’s what it’s like:
Prior to our first session: Complete the online intake form.
Initial intake session (~2 hours): Discuss intake form, specific health concern(s), and goals for yoga therapy; postural & breath assessments; therapeutic yoga practice.
Three subsequent follow-up sessions (~1 hour): Check-in; time for questions/clarifications; therapeutic yoga practice.
Actionable Homework Items, aka “Yoga Snacks”: Based on each session, we agree on the coming week’s therapeutic home practice(s). These are commitments to yourself to take steps to meet your goals. This is possibly the most important step, as change does not happen without action – know as karma in the yoga world.
